Considered a pioneer in the luxury sports watch category, the Royal Oak celebrates its 50th birthday in 2022. As expected, Audemars Piguet celebrated its iconic product with a series of celebratory models with great fanfare. However, excitement grew when Audemars Piguet launched the first 39mm Jumbo equipped with an ultra-thin flying tourbillon (calibre 2968). Officially known as the Royal Oak Automatic Flying Tourbillon Ultra-Thin RD#3, the 39mm Jumbo was followed by a second steel model with a smaller 37mm case and a vivid purple Petite Tapisserie dial. AP's ultra-thin flying tourbillon movement – Calibre 2968 – is the brand's third R&D project. A complication previously available only on 41mm diameter models, AP's technical team spent five years rethinking the architecture to adapt it to 39mm and 37mm models.
For the first time, the 37mm model features an 18k white gold case and bracelet with polished bevels and satin-brushed finishes. As the thinnest gold model in the 37mm Royal Oak collection, the case measures just 8.1mm thick, echoing the slim 39mm Jumbo version that inspired the RD#3 collection. The case features the redesign introduced in 2022 on some members of the Royal Oak family, with wider polished bevels and a more pronounced bracelet taper. The iconic eight-sided bevels and hexagonal screws are now set with 32 baguette-cut diamonds, highlighting its iconic geometry.
Another new feature of the 37 mm series is the smoky blue dial color obtained through PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition). The smoky or gradient effect on the periphery is produced by spraying black varnish as the dial rotates. The classic Petite Tapisserie pattern plays with the light, and the original Royal Oak bathtub-shaped hour markers are now represented by 12 shining baguette-cut diamonds. The original bathtub-shaped hands of the Royal Oak replica swiss watch are on display here and filled with luminous material for clear legibility in low-light conditions. The titanium flying tourbillon cage rotates at 6 o'clock, with its rhodium-plated balance wheel at dial level, adding the finishing touch.
Equipped with an ultra-thin 2968 movement with a thickness of only 3.4 mm, the skeletonized bridge and rotor allow the movement to be seen at a glance. The main plate and bridge are decorated with unique Geneva waves, replacing the traditional Geneva waves. Vibrating at a frequency of 3Hz, the maximum power output is 50 hours.
